Nanoparticle ink could print solar cells like newspaper

Nanoparticle ink could print solar cells like newspaper
28 August 2009

Country: United States

Nanoparticle inks could be used to print solar cells like newspaper, or painted onto the side of buildings or rooftops to produce electricity.

Manufacturing solar cells using gas-phase deposition in a vacuum chamber requiring high temperatures is relatively expensive. However, according to Professor Brian Korgel, University of Texas, Austin, and co-founder of Innovalight, it may be possible to reduce these costs by an amazing 90% - making the price of solar energy more competitive with other technologies.

His team has been working on a solution of nanomaterials using copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) which is not only cheaper than silicon but you also use less of it when manufacturing solar cells. The light-absorbing nanomaterials are 10,000 times thinner than a strand of hair, because their microscopic size allows for new physical properties that can help enable higher-efficiency devices.
Researchers apply the nanoparticle "inks" as a spray on the solar cells. Source: University of Texas.
His team has only developed a solar cell prototype at 1% efficiency, but in order to make the product commercially viable, they need to achieve 10% efficiencies, which Korgel believes could be possible within the next 3-5 years.

Not only could the inks, which are semi-transparent be printed on a roll-to-roll printing process on a plastic substrate or stainless steel, they could also be used on windows that double up as solar cells. Korgel says the prospect of being able to paint the "inks" onto a rooftop or building is not far-fetched - "you would have to paint the light-absorbing material and a few other layers as well," he concludes.

They recently demonstrated proof-of-concept in a recent issue of "Journal of the American Chemical Society". The work has attracted the interest of industrial partners.

Innovalight recently installed a system to inkjet print silicon-ink, which they claim can halve the number of costly manufacturing processes required to produce highly efficient solar cells.

Whilst researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed a low-cost solution processing method for CIGS-based solar cells . They used hydrazine as the solvent to dissolve copper sulfide and indium selenide in order to form the constituents for the copper-indium-diselenide material. Their material, which is simply dissolved into a liquid, can be easily painted or coated evenly onto a surface and baked. The solar cells achieved over 9% efficiency in the lab.

Tick saliva could hold cancer cure: Brazilian scientists

August 28th, 2009 by Marc Burleigh Tick

Adult deer tick, Ixodes scapularis. Image: Wikimedia Commons.

It may be one of nature's repulsive little blood-sucking parasites, but the humble tick could yield a future cure for cancers of the skin, liver and pancreas, Brazilian researchers have discovered.

They have identified a protein in the saliva of a common South American tick, Amblyomma cajennense, that apparently reduces and can even eradicate cancerous cells while leaving healthy cells alone.

"This is a radical innovation," said Ana Marisa Chudzinski-Tavassi, the molecular biologist at the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo who is leading the research.

"The component of the saliva of this tick... could be the cure for cancer," she told AFP.

She said she stumbled on the properties of the protein, called Factor X active, while testing the anti-coagulant properties of the tick's saliva -- the way it stops blood thickening and clotting so the tick can keep gorging itself on its host.

The protein shares some characteristics with a common anti-coagulant called TFPI (Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor), specifically a Kunitz-type inhibitor which also has been shown to interfere with cell growth.

A theory that the protein might have an effect on led to laboratory tests on cell cultures -- which exceeded all expectations.

"To our surprise it didn't kill normal cells, which were also tested," Chudzinski-Tavassi said. "But it did kill the tumorous cells that were being analyzed."

In her modest lab in the institute, housed in a rundown building, a line of immobile bloated ticks could be seen lined up with straws under their heads.

The small amounts of captured that way was reproduced many times over in yeast vats so that tests could be carried out on lab rats with cancer.

The results have been more than promising.

"If I treat every day for 14 days an animal's , a small tumor, this tumor doesn't develop -- it even regresses. The tumor mass shrinks. If I treat for 42 days, you totally eliminate the tumor," the scientist said.

Producing a medicine from the find, though, will require years of clinical tests and a significant financial investment -- neither of which Brazil is geared to provide.

Chudzinski-Tavassi has applied for a patent on the tick , and is presenting her team's discovery in medical journals and conferences around the world.

But she says moving beyond her lab "proof of concept" will be frustratingly difficult.

"To discover this is one thing. To turn it into a medicine is a whole other thing entirely," she said.

Scientists Uncork Potential Health Benefit Of Drinking Red Wine

Article Date: 17 Aug 2009 - 5:00 PDT

Scientists at Glasgow have shown how resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant found in red wine, works as an effective therapy for life-threatening inflammation.

Dr Alirio Melendez, a senior lecturer in the university's Division of Infection and Immunology, along with collaborators in Singapore, have solved a mystery which has puzzled experts since red wine was first identified as having health benefits. How does resveratrol control inflammation?

The study explains resveratrol's impact on inflammation as well as how it, or a derivative, can be used to treat potentially deadly inflammatory disease, such as appendicitis, peritonitis and systemic sepsis.

The findings have been published in the print edition of The FASEB Journal which belongs to the Federation of the American Societies for Experimental Biology.

"Strong acute inflammatory diseases such as sepsis are very difficult to treat and many die every day due to lack of treatment," said Dr Melendez, who is based at the University of Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre.

"Moreover, many survivors of sepsis develop a very low quality of life due to the damage that inflammation causes to several internal organs. The ultimate goal of our study was to identify a potential novel therapy to help in the treatment of strong acute inflammatory diseases."

The findings suggests that resveratrol may be utilised as a treatment for inflammatory diseases and may also lead to entirely new resveratrol-based drugs that are even more effective.

Resveratrol has been widely associated with health benefits ranging from anti-aging to boosting anti-viral treatments. Previous studies have found that resveratrol can help prevent blood clots and combat cancer.

"The therapeutic potential of red wine has been bottled up for thousands of years," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D. and editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "and now that scientists have uncorked its secrets, they find that studies of how resveratrol works can lead to new treatments for life-threatening inflammation."

The study follows previous work carried out by Dr Melendez published last month in the Proceedings of the National Association of Sciences of the USA (PNAS) journal.

The PNAS study showed how Dr Melendez and his team had discovered a method of reducing the impact of anaphylactic shock.

The team were the first in the world to pinpoint the molecule which amplifies the allergic reaction and to have successfully developed a biological agent to reduce the symptoms.

Nanoparticles could treat cardiovascular disease by mimicking “good cholesterol”

Northwestern University

C. Shad Thaxton, 33

To combat cardiovascular disease, Shad Thaxton, an assistant professor of urology, designed a nanoparticle that may be able to carry cholesterol right out of the body.

Several drugs treat cardiovascular disease by lowering levels of the lipoprotein complex LDL, commonly called "bad cholesterol" because it deposits the cholesterol in blood-vessel walls. But no existing therapies can directly increase HDL, or "good cholesterol," which carries the sticky molecule through the bloodstream and to the liver for excretion. Thaxton's nanoparticles mimic HDL. At their heart are gold spheres five nanometers in diameter; these are coated with fat and protein molecules that enable them to bind tightly to cholesterol. The work is in its early stages, but Thaxton envisions synthetic-HDL nanoparticles that will transport cholesterol from blood-vessel plaques to the liver to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. If proved safe and effective, he says, synthetic HDL could be used to prevent heart attacks and strokes within 10 years. --Katherine Bourzac

Good as gold: The bloodstream carries synthetic HDL to arterial plaques. Lipids and proteins on the gold particle's surface help it interact with cells in the plaque to extract cholesterol; the particle with the cholesterol is then excreted.

‘Trojan Horse’ Therapy Revolutionizes Cancer Treatment

August 15, 2009 | Health & Medicine, Recent Studies, Technology

Nanotechnology may be the key to a cure for cancer. A group of medical researchers in Australia have developed the ‘Trojan Horse’ technique that disarms and destroys cancer cells without harming healthy cells. This could revolutionize the treatment of cancer.

The ‘Trojan Horse’ is a nanoparticle that is able to seek out and penetrate only diseased cells, leaving the healthy cells alone. The first wave of nanoparticles disables the cancer cell’s ability to resist chemotherapy. The second wave of nanoparticles delivers a microscopic dose of chemotherapy within the cell, destroying it without causing any of the damage associated with full-body chemotherapy.

Dr. Jennifer MacDiarmid and Dr. Himanshu Barhmbhatt of EnGenelC Pty Ltd in Sydney announced that they successfully cured 100% of the laboratory mice they treated for cancer using the new technology. By the end of the trial the mice were all cancer-free with no side effects. Human trials are scheduled to begin this fall at the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Dr. MacDiarmid reported that this technology could dramatically improve the quality of life for cancer patients. “Significantly, our methodology does not damage the normal cells and is applicable to a wide spectrum of solid cancer types. The hope is that the benign nature of this EDV technology should enable cancer sufferers to get on with their lives and operate normally using outpatient therapy.”

White Tea Could Keep You Healthy And Looking Young

White tea may be good for your health, according to new research by Kingston University and Neal’s Yard Remedies. (Credit: Image courtesy of Kingston University)
ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2009) — Next time you’re making a cuppa, new research shows it might be wise to opt for a white tea if you want to reduce your risk of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or even just age-associated wrinkles. Researchers from Kingston University teamed up with Neal’s Yard Remedies to test the health properties of 21 plant and herb extracts. They discovered all of the plants tested had some potential benefits, but were intrigued to find white tea considerably outperformed all of them.

Professor Declan Naughton, from the School of Life Sciences at Kingston University in South West London, said the research showed white tea had anti-ageing potential and high levels of anti-oxidants which could prevent cancer and heart disease. “We’ve carried out tests to identify plant extracts that protected the structural proteins of the skin, specifically elastin and collagen,” he explained. “Elastin supports the body’s natural elasticity which helps lungs, arteries, ligaments and skin to function. It also helps body tissue to repair when you suffer wounds and stops skin from sagging.” Collagen is a protein found in connective tissues in the body and is important for skin, strength and elasticity, he added.

Results showed white tea prevented the activities of the enzymes which breakdown elastin and collagen which can lead to wrinkles that accompany ageing. These enzymes, along with oxidants, are associated with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Naughton said: “These enzymes and oxidants are key components of normal body processes. However, in inflammatory conditions, suppressing the activities of these excess components has been the subject of decades of research. We were surprised to find such high activity for the white tea extracts in all five tests that were conducted.”

The researchers were blown away by exactly how well the white tea had performed. “We were testing very small amounts far less than you would find in a drink,” Professor Naughton, one of the country’s leading specialists on inflammation, said. “The early indicators are that white tea reduces the risk of inflammation which is characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers as well as wrinkles.”

Eight of the other plants and herbs analysed also helped protect against the breakdown of both elastin and collagen. After white tea, bladderwrack performed well followed by extracts of cleavers, rose, green tea, angelica, anise and pomegranate.

Dr Pauline Hili, Technical Director for Neal’s Yard Remedies, said: “We are really excited by this research as it helps us to remain innovative and at the cutting edge of natural skin care. Celebrating the plants used in the Neal’s Yard Remedies products and understanding their specific actions on the skin is what it is all about. The Kingston University research program helps us to create safe, highly effective and cutting-edge products so it’s an ideal partnership for us.”

Researchers use bee venom, nanoparticles to kill cancer cells

(2009-08-13)
(KWMU) -

St. Louis researchers say they've found a new way to treat cancer tumors by attaching a toxin from bee venom to nanoparticles.

Washington University researchers attached the toxin melettin to nanoparticles. Nanoparticles are miniscule materials that can travel through the blood stream directly to a tumor.

Lead researcher Dr. Sam Wickline said when mice were treated with nanoparticles containing melettin, their cancer tumors shrunk.

"Not only is it active, remains active in the bloodstream and gets to the site and does what it's supposed to do but it seems to cause absolutely no problems to any tissues or organs."

Wickline said doctors haven't been able to use melletin to treat cancer tumors in the past because in large doses it can kill healthy cells. He said clinical trials on people could begin in as soon as two to three years.

Could Carbon Nano Tube Batteries Help Drive the Recovery of the Auto Manufacturers?

Next Alternative Inc.(TYN.F) introduces Carbon Nano Tube Technology with a car battery that has eight times the charge capacity of a regular battery and recharges in just minutes.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) August 9, 2009 -- Next Alternative Inc. wants to steer the future of the electric car and the U.S. auto industry itself into greener, and much more distant, pastures. Destinations that were once unattainable by the most efficient battery-powered cars will be an easy road trip with one of the company's new Carbon Nano Tube batteries (CNT Battery) under the hood.

With 8 times the Reserve Capacity (RC) of typical lead/acid batteries, CNT Battery technology allows cars to travel hundreds of miles between charges, up to an estimated 380 miles per charge. Even more impressive, CNT Batteries recharge in ten minutes from a regular electrical outlet, about the time it takes for a highway road trip pit stop. An hour's worth of recharging could add up to a pollution-free, coast-to-coast trip through Capitol Hill. The battery can be modified to the specifications of existing batteries.

CNT batteries provide the hybrid and electric car markets with a battery that far exceeds anything currently available to them at this time. Micro Bubble Technology, Inc. (MBTI), based in South Korea, developed CNT Battery technology. Carbon Nano Tubes are tiny tubular structures composed of a single layer of carbon atoms. MBTI developed a proprietary method of coating the anode, cathodes and modifying the electrolyte with Carbon Nano Tubes. The diminutive tubes hold 8 times as much energy as the lead in lead/acid batteries, and can hold a minimum of 2 times as much energy as rechargeable lithium batteries.

"CNT Batteries are superior to lead/acid batteries, lithium batteries and the silicone batteries powering electric cars today. Silicone based batteries perform better than current lead/acid batteries but do not allow electric vehicles to have a long range and require lengthy recharge times. Lithium-based batteries are expensive to produce and have lengthy recharge times. CNT technology will revolutionize the electric car industry, propelling it forward with battery that gives cars a much longer range and minimal recharge time." Next Alternative, Inc., President and CEO, Robert Ireland

As the U.S. government pushes for less dependence on fossil fuels through the development of alternative energy solutions, and leans on auto manufactures to create greener, more fuel efficient vehicles, the introduction of CNT batteries may just give the U.S. auto manufacturers the extra boost to help get their businesses back up to speed.

New immune-suppressing treatment forces the disease into remission in mice

This release is available in French.

A new experimental treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) completely reverses the devastating autoimmune disorder in mice, and might work exactly the same way in humans, say researchers at the Jewish General Hospital Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research and McGill University in Montreal.

MS is an autoimmune disease in which the body's own immune response attacks the central nervous system, almost as if the body had become allergic to itself, leading to progressive physical and cognitive disability.

The new treatment, appropriately named GIFT15, puts MS into remission by suppressing the immune response. This means it might also be effective against other autoimmune disorders like Crohn's disease, lupus and arthritis, the researchers said, and could theoretically also control immune responses in organ transplant patients. Moreover, unlike earlier immune-supppressing therapies which rely on chemical pharamaceuticals, this approach is a personalized form of cellular therapy which utilizes the body's own cells to suppress immunity in a much more targeted way.

GIFT15 was discovered by a team led by Dr. Jacques Galipeau of the JGH Lady Davis Institute and McGill's Faculty of Medicine. The results were published August 9 in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine.

GIFT15 is composed of two proteins, GSM-CSF and interleukin-15, fused together artificially in the lab. Under normal circumstances, the individual proteins usually act to stimulate the immune system, but in their fused form, the equation reverses itself.

"You know those mythical animals that have the head of an eagle and the body of a lion? They're called chimeras. In a lyrical sense, that's what we've created," said Galipeau, a world-renowned expert in cell regeneration affiliated with the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General and McGill's Centre for Translational Research. "GIFT15 is a new protein hormone composed of two distinct proteins, and when they're stuck together they lead to a completely unexpected biological effect."

This effect, explained Galipeau, converts B-cells -- a common form of white blood cell normally involved in immune response -- into powerful immune-suppressive cells. Unlike their better-known cousins, T-cells, naturally-occurring immune-suppressing B-cells are almost unknown in nature and the notion of using them to control immunity is very new.

"GIFT15 can take your normal, run-of-the-mill B-cells and convert them -- in a Superman or Jekyll -Hyde sort of way -- into these super-powerful B-regulatory cells," Galipeau explained. "We can do that in a petri dish. We took normal B-cells from mice, and sprinkled GIFT15 on them, which led to this Jekyll and Hyde effect.

"And when we gave them back intravenously to mice ill with multiple sclerosis, the disease went away."

MS must be caught in its earliest stages, Galipeau cautioned, and clinical studies are needed to test the treatment's efficacy and safety in humans. No significant side-effects showed up in the mice, he said, and the treatment was fully effective with a single dose.

"It's easy to collect B-cells from a patient," he added. "It's just like donating blood. We purify them in the lab, treat them with GIFT15 in a petri dish, and give them back to the patient. That's what we did in mice, and that's what we believe we could do in people. It would be very easy to take the next step, it's just a question of finding the financial resources and partnerships to make this a reality."

RESVERATROL

Is The Secret To Life Extension Finally Unlocked? How One Supplement Could Change the World.

3 August, 2009

As part of our ongoing series: "Aging around the world: What you need to know" we examine the revolutionary health product Resveratrol

What is the Best Anti-Aging Combination?

"Scientists have identified a substitute to red wine called Resveratrol that they believe might do more than just protect the heart but could, in very high concentration, significantly extend life by preventing a number of age-related illnesses."

Bridget Kruse - Sr. Reporter.
Bridget.Kruse@channel7daily.com

When our producer Michael Scadell asked me to do an investigative report on the popular nutritional supplement Resveratrol when combined with a body cleanse, I had no idea that this powerful combination of two currently available products is perhaps the closest version of the 'fountain of youth' that we've seen! I was facinated.

You may have seen Resveratrol all over the news and media outlets lately and if you're like me you may be curious about this new 'miracle product.' What can it do? Who can it help? What exactly is it? These were some of the many questions that I had and was determined to find answers to.

Resveratrol, frequently known as "ResV," is rich in antioxidants and is a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants but most often associated with the skin of red grapes and red wine. It has been shown to have multiple benefits including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering and other beneficial cardiovascular effects. Resveratrol has also been shown to help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, which is welcomed by many women and men alike.

For years many people have sworn by frequent body cleanses to help remove toxins that build up in the body and increase overall health. In recent years the issue of colon health and specifically colon cancer has been addressed around the world including a special done by US Newswoman Katie Couric who lost her husband due to the deadly disease. It is commonly accepted that toxic buildup of waste in the colon can contribute to many ailments and needs to be removed.

I began to realize the powerful potential of both of these supplements and why health food stores have been pushing them as the 'miracle regimen' for years. By combining the anti-aging and heart-health properties of Resveratrol with the simple cleansing power of a body cleanse we could indeed all be living healthier, longer lives.

"Barbara Walters, CNN, and 60 Minutes were my 'sources'

Resveratrol has been 'in the news' for nearly two decades. For example, 17 years ago, CBS News and Morely Safer did a story on the French who tend to eat a high fat diet, but drink a lot of wine and have lower levels of fat and cholesterol than many other countries.

Those benefits were not the wine, per se, but the Resveratrol in the skin of the red grapes used to make the wine. I learned more about Resveratrol's benefits from Dr. David Sinclair, Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard University Medical School. In an interview for ABC News, Sinclair told Barbara Walters that study trial participants who used Resveratrol "had improved skin, increased energy and lived 30% longer." Even the US TV Celebrity Doctor who often appears on the Oprah Winfrey show, Dr. Oz says, 'I take Resveratrol myself, and love it.' Dr. OZ goes on to say 'It turns on a system in your body that prevents your cells from aging'. Bottles of Resveratrol have been selling like wildfire ever since Dr. Oz's appearance. But were 'good sales' an indication that Resveratrol was a good product?

I wasn't convinced yet. I decided to try Resveratrol while using a body cleanse at the same time to see for myself... Like I said... I'm in news, and I don't take anything at face value. So I decided to put these two products, ResVMax & Life Cleanse to the test myself and monitor the results I achieved.

I asked two colleagues -- my editor David and my photographer Cyndi -- to take the challenge, too. They're skeptics like me, but they had become somewhat unhealthy over the years due to a hectic lifestyle and caring for their children and decided to give it a try. So the three of us made a pact to take Resveratrol & Life Cleanse for 30 days and document our findings.

We chose these brands due to their well known reputation and ordered them. We received the products shortly thereafter and began the test.

"The results were so dramatic we started to feel healthier and notice we had more energy within 24 hours of taking Resveratrol & Life Cleanse"

It is highly recommend to combine the two products (for more information on the importance of colon health please watch the second video on the right). As the month wore on we gained a tremendous amount of energy from Resveratrol's antioxidant properties that helped to improve our overall health, while feeling much less bloated due to the body cleanse. We were all sleeping better and we looked much better, too, but most importantly all three of us had more energy after a hard days work to spend time playing with our children instead collapsing of in front of the TV as we used to do because of exhaustion.

How You Can Try Both Products With No Risk

One of the attractive things that had us select both ResVMax and Life Cleanse over many competing brands was that both of these companies offer free trials of their products. This allows you to see if the product works as well as it did for us before having to order a 180 day supply for a lot of money only to find out you don't care for it. I personally also feel that any company who offers a trial like this is very confident that their product will work and is obviously standing behind it.

I'd like to thank both companies for graciously providing discount coupon codes for our readers to use which significantly discount the shipping cost of these products.
